TIFS: The Old Man Movie

02.11.2024

On November 2nd, the humorous animated film The Old Man Movie (Vanamehe film) will be screened at the Film Museum's film club Tallinn International Film Society (TIFS).

Tristan Priimägi, the curator of TIFS film program, award-winning film critic, and author of the book "101 Estonian Films," has written about the film in the following way:

“In October, the Film Museum will open a new exhibition titled Best Before: Expired?!, which explores the portrayal of aging in Estonian cinema. One of the most recognizable and dynamic elderly characters in modern Estonian film is undoubtedly the animated hero Old Man, who has been challenging perceptions of what an appropriate animated film should be for over a decade. The first sketches by creators Mikk Mägi and Peeter Ritso were released back in 2012 when they were still students in the animation department at the Estonian Academy of Arts. Their first Old Man cartoon was their graduation project. The feature-length film The Old Man Movie was released in 2019, directed by Mikk Mägi and Oskar Lehemaa.

Old Man and his world are a caricature of everyday rural life in Estonia, mocking our conservatism, slowness, pagan beliefs, and anything else in the way. In Old Man's world, the creators skillfully weave strong societal critiques and large amounts of self-irony into the film’s uncensored dark humor and intense plot, which are essential for constructing our national self-image.

What is certain is that, even in the relatively nihilistic world of Estonian animation, Old Man has set a new standard. The film is not for the faint-hearted but definitely for the curious.

The film will be screened with English subtitles.
Age rating: K-12.

With TIFS cinema tickets, attendees can gain FREE access to the exhibition "My Free Country" at the Estonian History Museum's Maarjamäe Castle, providing a deeper exploration of the themes depicted in the films.
