Leida Laius: An Incomplete Smile

The celebration of the 100th anniversary of the illustrious Estonian filmmaker Leida Laius’s birth continues with an exhibition at the Film Museum. This exhibition is the product of a collaboration between the Film Archive of the National Archives and the Estonian History Museum’s Film Museum.
The exhibition offers a fascinating glimpse into Laius’ creative journey, highlighting her remarkable body of work and accomplishments that have enriched Estonian film history. Drawing from the Film Archive of the National Archives, this exhibition reveals materials and artefacts from Laius’ life and work previously unseen by the public. On display are documents and materials ranging from the pre-production phases of her films (production projects, arts council protocols, and director’s visions) to behind-the-scenes glimpses (photographs from the sets), promotional materials (posters and publications), and various recognitions of her achievements (awards, diplomas, and more).
By exploring the creative legacy of a director who produced an artistically uncompromising, thematically cohesive, and widely acclaimed filmography in the male-dominated Tallinnfilm studio and film industry of her time, the exhibition pays tribute to Laius’ vital contributions to Estonian film. Visitors are invited to embark on a journey through her creative story, witness the making of her films, and reflect on the meanings they have generated throughout the years,
The exhibition will be open from 13 October 2023 to 31 March 2024.
